The Daily Orange is an independent newspaper published in Syracuse, New York. The editorial content of the paper — which originated in 1903 and went independent in 1971 — and its online platforms are entirely run by Syracuse University students.

The D.O.’s coverage of the greater SU area is disseminated through 125 issues during the 2017-18 academic year with a circulation of 6,000 copies, a readership of 30,000 and online circulation of about 500,000 during publishing months. The paper is published Monday through Thursday when SU classes are in session, Fridays before home football games and select basketball games and in the cases of notable and newsworthy occasions, such as the firing of former SU assistant men’s basketball coach Bernie Fine over sexual assault allegations. The D.O.’s online coverage is 24/7, including while SU is on break.

Editorial Board

The Daily Orange Editorial Board serves as the voice of the paper in discussions that concern Syracuse University and the greater Syracuse community. The editorial board — which consists of The D.O.’s head editors as well as members of its staff and senior staff — aims to contribute the perspectives of students to conversations that are often centered on local policies, news events and administrative actions. If there is an issue you would like the editorial board to weigh in on, please pitch your idea here.

Letter to the Editor Policy

To have a letter printed in The D.O. and published on dailyorange.com, please follow the guidelines listed below:

  • Limit your letter to 400 words
  • Letters must be emailed to opinion@dailyorange.com
  • If you are associated with Syracuse University or the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, include your full name and year or position on campus
  • If you are not associated with SU or SUNY-ESF, please include your town of residence and any relevant affiliations
  • Include a phone number where you can be reached. This is for verification purposes only and will not be printed.
  • Letters will be published on The D.O. website within one business day of the time they are submitted. Letters will be published in the paper as spacing allows.
  • Topics should pertain to the Syracuse area
  • Letters should not include any personal information pertaining to other people unless it is relevant to the topic at hand, which will be decided at the discretion of The D.O.’s editor in chief and managing editor
  • Any links to third-party websites or extended versions of the letter will also be published at the discretion of the editor in chief and managing editor
  • All letters will be edited for style and grammar

Takedown Policy

The D.O. does not remove content from its website without a compelling legal justification. The D.O. Board of Directors reserves the exclusive right to modify this policy without notice and as it deems necessary.

The D.O. staff believes dailyorange.com should reflect the contents of the print product as accurately as possible. We believe unnecessarily altering the contents of dailyorange.com would be a disservice to our readers because it would prevent the website from accurately documenting history as it happens.

If you feel there is a legal justification for The D.O. to take down an article, column or other material appearing on dailyorange.com, please submit your request in writing to editor@dailyorange.com or to the below address, including with your request 1) the name of the written work, 2) its author, 3) the date of publication, 4) a hyperlink to the online version, 5) the legal justification for taking the work down and 6) any supporting documents.
